The NSA
Since their conception, Their only true mission, To offer support, Through means of decryption. Those were simpler days, Now, much has changed, The world has evolved, Become a grander, more dangerous place. In a world made of lies, Filled with terrorists and spies, It's hard to consider, That even your next door neighbour may wear a disguise, How do you distinguish the truthful from the deceitful, Or how about the good from the evil? When everyone you know is not what they seem, Rather what they display as believable. Fret not good friends, The NSA has you covered, Watching every move, Like a fly on curtain covers, |
They know who you text,
Who you call, What time you rest, And what time you play ball. If you text your mother merry Christmas, Or post a comment giving your friend good wishes, It's not for your friends to see, It's for a man, at a desk, to record on his computer screen. Liberty, or Security, That is the choice in a world like ours, We do not have the pleasure to be picky or sour. Which do you pick in this ultimatum, To be free, or to be safe? A hard decision, Perhaps the hardest you will ever make. |

Discussion: The American Dream - A Great Gatsby Comparison
The American dream is based on the principle that every man is equal; therefore, from any walk of life, through hard work and dedication, he may become prosperous. However, this dream like many others has become corrupted and twisted, where the final goal is no longer of noble means, rather a pursuit of pleasure and immense wealth. In doing so, the principles and values that the American dream once upheld to the highest order are now trashed. The idea of equality of opportunity has been erased and the notion of upward social mobility seems impossible. In the Great Gatsby, once can see that the founding principles of the American dream are not accessible to Gatsby, therefore, he must make adjustments so that he may achieve greatness. In the mid-1920s, social classes not only existed. But were enforced. East egg, West egg and far below them: The Valley of Ashes. These three classes of people are divided not only by wealth or reputation but simply the years and years of disparity behind them. A notion of us, or them. These dividers were filled with cement, and through the years, have had time to harden and strengthen, making it even harder to pass these barriers. Gatsby is a man with immense wealth and reputation but still is not allowed into the prestigious East Egg. Proven when Gatsby tries to assume that Tom and he are equal but gets shut down in saying “Oh, no. No. We're different. I am. She is. We're all different from you. You see, we were born different. It's in our blood. And nothing that you do or say or steal... or dream up can ever change that.” This symbolic nail in the coffin proves to Gatsby and the reader that the American dream, or at least Gatsby’s version, is fictional. Yes, one can climb the social classes and pull themselves out of poverty, but all in time. Gatsby tried to achieve in 5 years what takes families and generations of people, hundreds of years. This is the corruption; when one tries to fast track success through devious and corrupt means. Gangsters and bootleggers like Gatsby achieved great wealth because their methods were not honest and worked behind the law. This success is empty and shallow. It is not filled with the same, honour and prestige that those in East Egg have; hence the disparity. The American dream that men like Thomas Jefferson witnessed is not the same that men like Nick Carraway did. The assumption Fitzgerald is making is true, sometimes between them, this concept has become corrupted. Where once, through honourable means of work, came prosperity. Now, deception and crime can get one more empty wealth than once thought possible. This is the corruption of the American dream.
